The draw: free unlimited entry to Siam Park — Europe's biggest water park and Tripadvisor's world #1 (10 years running) — plus a free daily shuttle. Height limits: 3 rides 110cm+, 5 rides 125cm+.
On site: bungalow/villa village, 2 pools + 2 kids' pools with waterslides, kids' club, gym, low-key evening entertainment. 200m to the beach.
Bahia Principe Explore Fantasia
The draw: fairytale-castle resort with castle shows, mini-discos and a teen games room. Water play is toddler-scale: two splash parks (tipping buckets, water guns, sprinklers) + occasional inflatable slides.
On site: 5 pools incl. adults-only infinity pool with sea views, 5 restaurants, kids' buffet, spa, gym.
Lanzarote 🇪🇺 EU · no FCDO warnings · ~4h flight
H10 Suites Lanzarote Gardens
The draw: a pirate-ship splash pool at the centre of the resort where kids "whizz down slides and soak themselves under mushroom fountains", plus a toddler pool. Kids' club for every age, mini-disco, 2 playgrounds and a zip line.
On site: 2 big pools, buffet with kids' section and ice-cream sundae station, gym, spa.
🚫 Checked and excluded: Sandos Papagayo
In the water-park candidate set, but the product page has zero slides, splash pools or aqua park — 3 big pools (one heated in winter) and a small kids' pool only. Also the longest Canaries transfer: 90 min.
Keep it only if you want a big, well-reviewed 4★ with a heated winter pool and don't care about slides.
Gran Canaria 🇪🇺 EU · no FCDO warnings · ~4h15 flight
Gloria Palace Amadores
The draw: two infinity-edge pools over the sea plus a kids' splashing spot with colourful slides; hotel-run kids' club for ages 4–12 and free kids' ice-cream all day on All Inclusive.
On site: clifftop setting, 300m to the beach via a panoramic lift, spa, bowling alley, gym, evening shows.
Hotel LIVVO Valle Taurito
The draw: shares the Lago Taurito water park with its sister hotel — sidewinder and bowl slides, two kamikazes, three body slides, plus a pirate-ship kids' area with mini-slides. Height limits apply (120cm big slides / 100cm kids').
On site: saltwater pools, kids' club, 70m to Taurito beach, spa, sports.
Lopesan Baobab Resort
The draw: striking African-themed 5★ with 7 pools, a lazy river, cave-and-waterfall zone and two children's pools; next to Meloneras promenade and the dunes.
Trade-off: the product page never calls this a water park, and there's no All Inclusive (B&B / half board / full board only).
Egypt (Red Sea) 🇪🇬 warm + dry · ~5h30–5h45 flight
This is where the actual big water parks are. Hurghada and Sharm are the two resort zones; FCDO explicitly rates Red Sea tourist areas low risk and says security forces protect these resorts — but see the safety section for the regional-tension caveat.
Pickalbatros Jungle Aqua Park “Neverland”
The draw: a full on-site water park — 81 slides (41 adult, 40 children), lazy river, kids' pool, plus 36 swimming pools across the resort. 11 restaurants (Indian, Italian, Asian, German, Mediterranean…) and a late bar until 2am.
On site: kids' club + mini-disco, beach shuttle, spa, floodlit tennis, football, minigolf.
Jaz Makadi Aquaviva
The draw: free unlimited access to Makadi Water World — Egypt's largest water park, 50 slides and rides — plus a pirate-themed splash park with mini-slides and a giant tipping bucket for little ones (height/age limits: big slides 120cm + age 10).
On site: 4–5 pools, family rooms with sofa-beds, golf nearby, spa, beach shuttle, evening shows.
Steigenberger Aqua Magic
The draw: an on-site aqua park with 6 main slides, a pirate-ship pool packed with more slides and fountains, a lazy river, and a rooftop adults-only "Aqua Relax" pool.
On site: ~9 restaurants (incl. rooftop à la carte & Asian/sushi), kids' clubs + sandy play area, PADI dive club, 9-hole floodlit golf, family suites sleeping 4.
SUNRISE Royal Makadi Resort
The draw: 8 pools — one with "a tangle of waterslides", plus two children-only pools with no adults allowed. Private beach with its own dive centre, 9 restaurants and 11 bars.
On site: snorkelling on Red Sea reefs, kayaking, scuba, 3 tennis courts, spa, archery.
🚫 Checked and excluded: Rixos Sharm El Sheikh
Superb hotel, wrong job: adults-only, seven pools and no water park. Sharm itself is fine (FCDO rates it low risk, 20 min transfer) — a family Sharm pick just needs a different resort.

The draw: two heated children's pools with slides (one babies-only), RiuLand kids' club (ages 4–7 and 8–12), weekly kids' shows, mini-disco. 24-hour All Inclusive with 6 restaurants and 9 bars. Fully refurbished for October 2026.
On site: beachfront on Praia de Lacação, 8 pools (incl. infinity + adults-only), spa, RiuFit, watersports.
Meliá Tortuga Beach Resort & Spa
The draw: beachfront family resort on Sal with 2 kids' pools, kids' club, mini-disco and family rooms sleeping 2+2 (second bedroom, 2 bathrooms). 5 restaurants, swim-up pool bar, YHI spa.
Trade-off: the water play is a splash park at the sister hotel (Meliá Dunas) and costs extra, not on-site and not included.

Canaries in January = pleasant 21–22°C afternoons, cool evenings (pack a hoodie), sea too cold for long swims (19–20°C) so the heated resort/water-park pools are the deciding factor. Egypt is the sweet spot for actual swimming and water parks. Cape Verde is warmest but breezier.
· 2 Jan is the tail of the UK Christmas break (schools mostly return 4–5 Jan).
· New Year week is winter peak pricing; 2 Jan beats 26 Dec–1 Jan, and prices soften again after ~7 Jan (your ±3-day flexibility is the lever).
· Ramadan 2027 starts ~8 Feb — this trip lands entirely before it.
· Some Canaries standalone parks run reduced winter hours — confirm at booking (Siam Park runs year-round, heated).

🇪🇺 Spain — Canaries Lowest risk

🇪🇬 Egypt — Hurghada / Sharm Lower risk at resorts, watch the region
FCDO, verbatim: “Travel to Red Sea tourist areas in the southern part of the Sinai Peninsula is generally low risk. Security forces carry out routine checks on vehicles and at airports to protect resorts such as Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada and Marsa Alam.” Crime is low (tourist police on 126).
- Political environment is restrictive — avoid demonstrations and political discussion; foreign nationals can be at risk of detention for political activity, including social-media posts.
- Regional tension is live: FCDO notes strikes across the region since July 2026 and a drone strike that damaged two ships off Damietta (northern Egypt, far from the Red Sea resorts). It says the situation “remains unpredictable”.
- FCDO advisories against travel apply elsewhere in Egypt (North Sinai, Libya border, Western Desert interior) — none of which affects these resorts.

🇨🇻 Cape Verde Stable, calm
Stable multiparty democracy with no recent history of terrorism; FCDO crime advice is ordinary petty theft (pickpocketing, bag-snatching reported on Sal and Boa Vista — use the hotel safe).
- Beach safety is the real risk: strong tides and undertow — swim only at lifeguarded beaches and respect the flags (red = do not enter, yellow = paddle only).

🏥 UK travel advice & insurance considerations
Most people on this trip are flying from the UK, so the FCDO advice and UK insurance rules are what actually govern the holiday. Read this before you pay a deposit.
If the FCDO advises against travel to your destination and you go anyway, most UK policies are void — and your travel insurance could be invalidated even for destinations with partial advisories. Egypt is the one to watch: today the Red Sea resorts are not in an advisory area, but the region is volatile. Check FCDO status at booking and again the week you fly. Check FCDO advice →

A free UK GHIC gives state healthcare in Spain — carry it. It is not a substitute for insurance: it doesn't cover private clinics (which is what resorts use), repatriation, cancellation, lost baggage or a water-park injury. Get a GHIC →
No reciprocal healthcare, so buy comprehensive cover. Make sure the policy has: emergency medical + repatriation (look for £2m+), 24/7 assistance line, no blanket terrorism exclusion, and cover for resort/pool activities (diving, snorkelling, waterslides). Note that many insurers treat FCDO-advisory areas differently — read the exclusions, not the headline.
No reciprocal care; hospitals outside Praia are basic and serious cases are moved off-island. Prioritise medical repatriation / air-ambulance and inter-island transfer cover over price, and confirm the policy covers Boa Vista and Sal. Beach currents cause the most incidents — keep kids supervised and to lifeguarded beaches.
Buy insurance within a few days of booking to get cancellation cover from day one; declare all pre-existing conditions; insure every traveller including children; check the excess (and whether you can waive it) and whether airline failure and baggage are included.

Red Sea resorts (Hurghada/Sharm) have no malaria risk — check typhoid/hepatitis A with your GP; bottled water only in Egypt. Cape Verde: no malaria on Sal or Boa Vista. Water parks: respect minimum heights (e.g. Siam Park 110–125cm; Makadi big slides 120cm + age 10; Lago Taurito 100–120cm), supervise around lazy rivers and splash zones, and note sun exposure at 22–25°C is still strong (UV 4–7).
